Making Instructions (Login to see the full instructions)

Preparing the straws. Ideally, the straws would be sourced from bars & restaurants then sanitised for use within this product, then used as the lighting for the venue. For the sake of experimentation however, I used new straws. The straws need to be cut along their length in approximately 3-4mm sections. I used an old lamp shade to collect the cuttings.
Cut as many straws as you can, keep repeating step one over many weeks if need be.
Once you have enough material, it is on to the melting stage.
Create a Jig to allow control over how much material you melt at any one time. I used foam board, but any thick material will do.
Place the jig on a baking tray, fill it with material, then remove the jig. The material is then heated on a medium heat untill the plastic fuses together - creating a lattice.
Repeat step 5 until all the material has been melted. Leaving a stack of mesh panels.
Begin to practice joining the panels together. I practiced on some scraps of the mesh material untill i knew how the plastic would react.
You can then begin creating large structures from the mesh if you wish - it will sculpt into most simple shapes.
Mould the material around the bowl, using tinfoil to protect it.
