Part of the Design out Waste project, which addresses the problem of obsolescence by looking at the end of life of electrical products, the Pragmatist toaster is based on a repair and life extension strategy and consists of a modular toasting slot system which is held together magnetically. The individual toasting slots join together to form any size of toaster. When an element eventually fails, the broken slot can be unclipped from the toaster leaving the remaining slots still working. The consumer still has a working toaster while the broken slot is returned to the manufacturer and a replacement sent out. Each modular slot is thin enough to fit through a letterbox, making the return process as easy as possible.
